Chicago: The Chicago Times, 1863 Printed newspaper broadside. 28 x 20 1/2 inches. Regarding the events surrounding the general order by Major General A. E. Burnside to suppress publication of the because of its policies supporting some issues of the South during the Civil War. On the evening of the order's issuance, the newspaper reports 20,000 Chicagoans gathered in the court house square in protest. Troops were called to quell the disturbance, but the order was subsequently rescinded, following proceedings, by President Abraham Lincoln, thus preserving the rights and privileges of free press in the U.S. Chipping to edges of the pages; creased from folds; large circular dampstain to center; otherwise fine.
