Walnut Dower Chest, probably Roanoke River basin, North Caroline, late 18th century, the molded lift top with applied edge opening to a well with till, the dovetailed case of two thumb-molded short drawers on bracket feet, some old brasses, iron carrying handles replaced, old refinish, (restored), ht. 27 1/2, wd. 49, dp. 24 in. Provenance: Direct family descent in a family of Southern origins. The line carries names and locations back to George Walton Williams, a prominent merchant and banker in Charleston, South Carolina, whose house still stands at 15 Meeting Street, Charleston, South Carolina.
