Rare Bower Family Chippendale Mahogany Carved Dining Table, John Goddard, Newport, Rhode Island, 1760-1775, the top with half-round molded edge and hinged leaves above the rectangular cutout aprons flanked by cabriole legs with ogival knee brackets and flattened inside edges ending in ball and claw feet with undercut talons, old surface, (imperfections), ht. 28 1/2, dia. 61 in. Note: Master Craftsmen of Newport the Townsends and Goddards by Michael Moses (Americana Press, 1984), pictures in figure 5.14, p. 226, a very similar table with construction as may be seen in figure 5.6, p. 219. Provenance: Direct family descent from Jerathmael Bowers who was born in Somerset on the Taunton River in Massachusetts and followed in the footsteps of his father as a shipbuilder and merchant. In 1763 he married Mary Sherburne, an heiress from Boston. At about that time, he built on a tract called "Labour in Vain," a large house, the dining room of which contained unusual paneling, now installed at Winterthur Museum. The house was inherited in 1799 by his son John. According to the Treasury of Early American Houses , by J. H. Sweeney, Viking Press p. 98, " A conservative room of the Chippendale period is the Bowers parlor from the house built in the 1760s by Jerathmael Bowers, at Somerset, Mass."
