THEODORE GERICAULT (FR 1791-1824), PENCIL, PEN & BROWN INK & BROWN WASH, DRAWING ON 2 SIDES: 13. 5 x 21.5 cm (5 1/4" x 8 1/2") total size; "La Mort de Paris" on recto; "Le Christ en Croix" (in pencil) on verso; P.O.D. in a circle stamp in far lower right corner; framed. Drawing done for the early stages of the "prix de Rome" contest in 1816 with the subject being "Oenone Refusant de Secourir Paris" (although he was not one of the finalists). Provenance: sold by Hazlitt, Gooden & Fox Ltd., London England, 7-9-1986, catalogue No. 8, plate 8 in the Hazlitt, Gooden & Fox exhibition, "French Drawings, 19 June - 18 July 1986" - photocopies of the bill of sale and exhibition listing (also seen in the last photo detail) both in customer file.
