Vernon Howe Bailey (American, 1874-1953) Two Ink Drawings of New York City: A Midtown Silhouette and Carnegie Hall. Both signed "Vernon Howe Bailey" l.r., Carnegie dated "1935" beneath the signature, both identified in pencil inscriptions on the lower edges. Pen and ink with touches of whiting on heavy paper, sizes to 22 x 15 in., matted, unframed. Condition: Toning, soiling to the margins, Silhouette with brown paper tape remnants along the edges of the recto, both hinged to the back mats. N.B. The artist has annotated A Midtown Silhouette along the bottom edge to identify the buildings beyond the New York Public Library, including the Chrysler Tower, Lincoln Building, and the Colonial Building. Estimate $20-200 "Silhouette" is irregularly trimmed on left edge, reducing width of the sheet to 14 3/4 to 14 3/8 in., resulting in the image now being off center, leaving a small margin on the left side. This work is also identified on a printed label affixed to the inside of the mat. "Carnegie Hall" is also further identified in a pencil inscription on the reverse and on a modern label on the back of the mat. Items may have wear and tear, imperfections, or the effects of aging.
