“Eureka Electric Clock” Eureka Clock Co. Ltd., London, No. 4178. Made circa 1910. Rare and early, brass-cased, electrically driven mantel clock with Eureka’s patent No. 14614 movement of 1906. Circular brass base housing the batteries, the movement supported on two turned brass pillars, glass shade. Off-white enamel with radial Roman numerals, outer minute divisions, molded brass bezel. Blued steel “spade” hands. Brass with spotted decoration, linear plates, massive cut bimetallic compensation balance with peripheral adjustment screws, electrical coil within the steel arm, impulse pin and contact strip, blued steel flat balance spring. Movement signed. Dim. 21 x 22 cm., excluding dome. Property of a French Gentleman Notes The Eureka clock was designed by Timothy Bernard Powers, an American engineer and patented by the Kutnow brothers in 1906. It was the first successful use of an electrically maintained balance wheel for timekeeping. In 1909 a factory was set up at 361 City Road, London, to commence production of this novel electric clock. It is thought that only about 10,000 clocks were made and the factory closed in 1914.
