New York Chippendale mahogany balloon seat side chair, ca. 1770 , the shaped crest rail centering on a carved shell flanked by scroll carved volutes, above a pierced splat and a balloon slip seat, supported by cabriole legs, with shell carved knees and ball and claw feet, 39" h. For an identical example, see American Furniture Queen Anne and Chippendale Periods by Downs, Fig. 150. The chair illustrated is No. II of a set of 12 which belonged to General Samuel Blachley Webb of New York and Connecticut, an aide-de-camp to General Washington.
