Elgin, No. 9267453, "Veritas" Grade, circa 1900.Very fine, 25-year gold-filled, keyless watch with an unusual 24-hour Montgomery dial. Four-body, triple-hinged "bassine", back engraved with floral pattern with engine turning, band engine turned with vermicelli scrolling, polished cuvette. White enamel, double sunk bold Roman numerals, inner upright Arabic 24-hour chapter from 13 to 24, outer minute dot divisions with one-minute Arabic markers (five-minutes in red), sunk sub-seconds. Blued steel "Double-Swell American Spade" hands. 18 size, nickel, half-plate, damascened in geometrical patterns with rosette in the cente, 23 jewels in raised gold settings, adjusted, gold train, safety motor barrel, straight line counterpoised lever escapement, cut-bimetallic compensation balance with gold screws, blued steel Breguet balance spring, , Moseley & Hunter patented (No. 157,021) micrometric regulator, lever-set. Diam. 55mm. Notes The dial of this watch features a very rare combination of B. N. Bliss's design, found mostly on Waltham watches, and Henry S. Montgomery's design fitted on one of Elgin's best grades.The Bliss patent (No. 53110) was designed to enable railroad personnel to read quickly at nightime, while Montgomery's patent (No. 54950) was made to enable easy and quick reading to the nearest minute.For a patent, see at the back of the catalogue.
