Edward Robert Theurer, Chaux-de-Fonds, circa 1840. Very fine 18K gold extra-flat watch with bagnolet caliber and visible movement. Three-body, "bassine pincée", engine-turned back cover. White enamel ring with Roman numerals and outer minute divisions. Blued steel "Breguet" hands. 40 mm, single gilt brass engraved plate, 10 jewels, bar caliber with engraved bridges, plate and barrel, cylinder escapement, three-arm, steel with flat balance-spring, female winding.Signed on the back plate.Diam. 44 mm, thickness (with glass) 4,75 mm. Notes Bagnolet CaliberIn the bagnolet caliber the movement is inverted and the train reversed. The idea was to make a very thin watch by reducing the thickness of the bridges and the dial and eliminate the cuvette. Philippe-Samuel Meylan (1772-1845) is credited with its invention.Theurerwas a family horological business. The next generation was to invent the keyless winding system by opening and closing the hunting-case watch, similar to that of Haas.
