Girard Perregaux, Chaux-de-Fonds, Swiss, No. 14936, case No. 62204, made for the South American market, circa 1880.Very fine and rare 18K gold, hunting cased, keyless lever pocket chronometer with freesprung spherical balance spring. This design of movement was the predecessor of famous 3-bridge model. Five body, bassine et filets, engine-turned with reeded band, also engine-turned inside the covers. Gold cuvette engraved on the border with a floral decoration over glazed bezel for viewing the movement. Silver with applied gold cast floral decoration, radial Roman numerals and subsidiary seconds. Blued steel fancy hands. Notes Constant Girard (1825-1903)He changed his name to Girard-Perregaux after marrying Marie Perregaux, the daughter of a well know chronometer maker, had established his reputation as a maker of precision watches. The present lot is proof that he did not change his standards after he achieved his fame. The company did business first with Peru and Chili and later with Argentina, where this watch was most likely destined.
