Copernicus Patek i Spólka W GENEWIE, No. 1409, made for the Polish market in 1845, sold on December 1, 1846. Very fine and elegant 18K gold slim pocket watch from the first year of the partnership between Patek, Philippe and Gostkowski, accompanied by the “Extract from the Archives”. Four-body, “bassine et filets” with coin edge, spring-loaded back cover finely engraved with the portrait of Copernicus, after a work by Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen (1770-1844) placed in Warsaw in 1832, gold hinged cuvette. White enamel, radial Roman numerals, outer minute divisions, secured by two small screws. Gilt Breguet hands. 38 mm. (17’’’), Cal. 3, frosted gilt, cylinder escapement, three-arm gilt balance with flat balance spring. Signed on the cuvette, punched with maker’s mark under the dial. Diam. 42 mm Notes This watch, interesting for its near mint condition and decorative motif, is also one of the earliest Patek & Co watches. The last known serial number bearing the Patek & Czapek signature is 1161. The watch with the next serial number (1162) bears the Patek & Co. signature, making this watch the 248th made by the new company. Nicolaus Copernicus (1473-1543) who countered the prevailing geocentric theory, is considered the father of modern astronomy.
