Liebherr a Imenstadt, circa 1790. Fine and rare silvered metal self-winding calendar watch with special escapement. Later double body "forme quatre baguettes", polished with reeded band. White enamel with Roman numerals and outer calendar ring. Gold "halfmoon" hands. Hinged gilt brass full plate with cylindrical pillars, going barrel, the gold winding weight pivoted on the border of the back plate with polished steel bankers and locking device when the mainspring is fully wound, double wheel duplex escapement visible through the back plate aperture, plain brass three-arm balance, flat balance spring with regulator. Signed on the dial. In very good condition. Diam. 52 mm. Notes Very fine movement which can be compared with the rare selfwinding watch movements produced in Prance and Switzerland during the last quarter of the 18th century, the main difference being the double wheel duplex escapement of the type used by several makers in Austria and Germany towards the end of the 18th century. Joseph Liebherr (17(37-1840) watchmaker, eminent mathematician and instrument maker, worked in Imenstadt and in Munich.
