Sold for:
$144,500

Important Delaware Valley Queen Anne tiger maple highboy, ca. 1760 , the molded cornice above 3 over 2 short drawers over 3 long drawers resting on a base with 3 over 2 short drawers above a scalloped skirt resting on squared cabriole legs terminating in Spanish feet, retains original batwing brasses, 73 1/2" h., 38" w. Walnut and mahogany were the woods of choice for Philadelphia Queen Anne and Chippendale carvers and joiners, although curly maple was a viable alternative. This rarity of wood use makes this piece an exceedingly rare example of maple Queen Delaware Valley furniture. For nearly identical example see Sotheby's June, 1997 Lot 573. Provenance: Descended in the Howell family and bears an 18th c. paper label identifying the original owner as G. Howell.
