Pair of Hongmu Display Cupboards, China, 18th century, the top section of one shelf with three open sides, each cupboard fitted with numerous smaller drawers and cupboards, finely pierced with geometric diapers and carved with coiled archaic scrolls, fitted with delicately chased white brass mounts, the drawer pulls in the form of twin fish, the wood with a mellow patina, light tube set inside the top shelf, ht. 55, lg. 35 1/2, dp. 13 3/4 in. Provenance: Ex Spink & Son Limited; descended in the estate of a Cambridge, Massachusetts, and New York City academic family. Losses to various sections, cracks, the door panel to a side cupboard loose (due to the loss of a mount), the light tube is eletrified
