Bowditch, Nathaniel (1773-1838) The New American Practical Navigator . Newburyport, Massachusetts: Blunt, 1802. Large octavo, first edition, folding frontispiece in facsimile, all six full page engravings present, title page with losses in the blank margin, in old boards, rebacked, with the appearance of a book that has been well-used at sea. Bowditch set out to edit John Hamilton Moore's Practical Navigator , the American edition, but he found that it was so replete with errors, that it was necessary for him to start from scratch. Every American naval vessel is required to carry a copy of Bowditch (with modern updates).
