Howard & Company No. 23 Ninety-day Astronomical Regulator, Boston, c. 1870, the walnut "drum head" case with glazed dial door hinged at 12 o'clock, 16 1/2-in. silvered brass astronomical dial marked E. Howard & Co. Makers/Boston , outer minutes, hours and seconds within with three blued steel hands, ninety-day duration movement with damascened plates, jeweled escape wheel pivots and dead-beat escapement pivots and pallets, Geneva stop, rear mounted winding drums, and brass dust covers all regulated by a four-jar mercury temperature compensated pendulum and powered by two brass-cased weights, glazed waist door, side lites, mirrored backboard and silvered beat scale, ht. 86 1/2 in. Provenance: Edward W. Freeman's jewelry store, Lowell, Massachusetts, until 1975, thenc to the consignor. No significant repairs, replacements or condition issues. Original lacquered brass components including pendulum frame, plates and dust covers, original dial silvering, hands and beat scale. Pendulum jars cracked near the tops previously sealed with clear sealant.
