Manner of Andrea Schiavone (Italian, c. 1500-1563) Noli Me Tangere Unsigned, bears a presentation plaque. Oil on canvas, 14 1/2 x 35 1/2 in. (36.7 x 90.2 cm), framed. Condition: Lined, retouch, rippling, old paint losses, surface imperfections. Presentation plaque reads: Andrea Meldola, dit "Le Schiavone" 1522-1582, Ecole du Titien. Significant retouch, probably to cover old flaking and paint losses, scattered across the composition, with greater concentration in l.l. quadrant and also in the clothing and legs (but not the faces) of the figures. No apparent tears or large repairs. The canvas, which is of a somewhat rough weave, has been lined and restretched. When examined in raking light, surface imperfections are visible. Old, stable craquelure and scattered losses, more noticeable l.l. quadrant, under the new varnish. Subtle canvas deformation, mainly appearing as broad rippling in the corners.
