Returning to the United States in 1889, Reid settled in New York to paint and teach. Shortly thereafter, in 1892, he began the major public mural commissions which would distinguish his career. In 1898 Reid joined with several other artists, including Childe Hassam and John Twachtman, to found "The Ten," a loosely-knit group of Impressionists that exhibited together annually until 1919. Reid continued to paint canvases throughout his career, and he exhibited regularly at the National Academy of Design, where he became a full Academician in 1906. Reid's easel paintings tended to feature single figures, often a young woman holding flowers, set in a landscape or garden, or later dressed in a kimono in an interior setting, but the artist also painted a full range of subjects including landscapes and nudes.
