Brass-studded Leather Document Box, America, mid-19th century, hinged rectangular box covered in black leather with leather handle with brass tack studded borders, brass plaque engraved "Francis W. Upham Attorney at Law," (minor losses), ht. 7 1/2, wd. 16, dp. 10 1/4 in. Note: Francis William Upham (1817-1895), was born in Rochester, New York, received his BA degree at Bowdoin College, and was admitted to the Massachusetts Bar in 1844. He was a professor of mental and moral philosophy and a lecturer on history at Rutger's Female College, New York, from 1867-70. He was also the author of many works on religious topics.
