J. Sultan Ali (Indian, 1920-1990) The First Sin Signed and dated "...SULTAN ALI '65" l.l., titled, inscribed, and identified on a label from Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi, on the reverse. Oil on canvas, 31 3/4 x 54 1/4 in. (81.0 x 137.0 cm), framed. Condition: Surface grime, mildew, craquelure. Provenance: Purchased from the artist c. 1965; gift to the present owner. Exhibitions: Lalit Kala Akademi, National Exhibition of Art, 1965. N.B. J. Sultan Ali was born in Mumbai and studied painting at the venerable Government School of Arts and Crafts, now called the Government College of Fine Arts, in the South Indian city of Chennai. He exhibited in a number of national and international art exhibitions, including shows at the Lalit Kala Academy, Venice Biennale, São Paulo Biennial, and India Triennale New Delhi. Surface grime/black mold to top 1/3 register, would benefit from a cleaning, no additional condition issues to report.
