Bronze Ewer, Japan, 19th century, in the form of an ancient ritual vessel he , cast in low relief around the exterior with stylized taotie masks against a leiwen -ground, with a frieze of cicada designs right above the three stout legs cast as bats, the doomed cover with further cicada designs chained to the handle issuing from an archaic bird on one side of the body, with the handle of an elongated tiger, mouth in the form of a phoenix, ht. 5 1/2 in. (7 1/4 in. with handle).
