Chicago: HMH Publishing, 1953. 4to, 42pp. Playboy #1 Newsstand Edition, photographic wrappers featuring Marilyn Monroe on the cover and list price of 50 cents. The first issue of Playboy complete with "Sweetheart of the Month" nude color photograph of Monroe as first centerfold and numerous articles including a Sir Arthur Conan Doyle fiction excerpt, "Introducing Sherlock Holmes", an article on the Dorsey Brothers, and a collection by cartoonist Virgil "VIP" Partch. With little precedent for such a magazine, Hugh Hefner was cautious with the initial publication and only about 50,000 copies of the first number of the magazine were issued. Very light soiling and rubbing to wrappers; otherwise internally clean with no tears or creases.
