Nicollas Vallin, London, circa 1595. Fine and rare gilt metal, oval single-hand concealed dial watch. Oval, 36 x 46 mm, gilt brass full plate, turned baluster pillars, fusee and gut line, short four-wheel train with five-leaf pinions, verge escapement, three-arm steel circular balance, blued-steel balance spring, elongated pinned cock pierced and engraved with asymmetrical floral decoration, wheel and click set-up.Signed on the back plate.Dim. 67 x 42 mm. Published in the Sandberg book, pages 40-41. Notes Nicholas Vallinwas born around 1565 in Brussels, came to London, married a Dutch girl in 1590, lived and worked in Blackfriars, and died in 1603. He is one of the earliest recorded English watchmakers.
