Cupid’s Loss Louis Duchène & Fils, Genève, No. 53701. Made circa 1800. Very fine, 18K gold, polychrome enamel and pearl-set pocket watch. Three-body, “Empire”, hinged seed pearl-set bezel, the band decorated with black and white champlevé enamel in a lozenge pattern, glazed hinged back with seed pearl-set border, finely painted Geneva enamel and engraved gold scene of cupid weeping by an urn on a pedestal swathed by a red cloak, flower and trophy border. 40 mm., frosted gilt full plate with flared turned pillars, fusee and chain, verge escapement with micrometric potence adjustment, three-arm brass balance, flat balance spring, pierced and chased continental balance cock, polished steel endplate, silver regulator dial. Movement signed. Diam. 47 mm. Notes Louis Duchène & Fils Recorded from about 1791 to about 1820, they are known for coach watches with grande and petite sonnerie and calendar, repeating the minutes and quarters, watches with champlevé enamel and “fantaisie” watches.
