Naum Gabo (British/Russian, 1890-1977) Opus 5, alternatively titled " The Constellations ," 1950-51, edition of 42 (Williams, p. 57). Signed, dedicated, numbered, and dated "Gabo To Clarice and Willard Thorp N. Gabo 24/8..51" in pencil l.r., titled in pencil l.l. Woodcut in brown on fine paper, image size 9 1/2 x 8 in. (24.0 x 20.3 cm), framed. Condition: Subtle creasing/cockling near edges, not examined out of frame. N.B. Willard L. Thorp (1900-1992) was an educator and economist and served in the administrations of Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry S. Truman, and John F. Kennedy. He helped draft the Marshall Plan. Clarice Brows Thorp was his second wife. Out of the frame the margins are 1/4 inch or more, with the full sheet measuring 12 x 9 inches. There is cockling throughout, but more prevalent along the edges, but there are no pressed creases. The work is gently light struck.
