Jeanne Rongier (French, fl. 1869-1900) Portrait of a Seamstress at Rest Signed "J. Rongier." l.r., with a canvas stencil from Durand Ruel, Paris, on the reverse. Oil on canvas, 9 3/4 x 13 in. (24.8 x 33.0 cm), framed. Condition: Abrasions beneath frame liner, tack holes to margins, craquelure, alligatoring, surface grime. N.B. Rongier was a student of Henri Harpignies, Évariste Luminais, and Louis Henri Senart, debuting at the Paris Salon of 1869. The sitter's trade is indicated by the spool of thread and scissors resting on the table, and relates to a larger known composition, Sewing by Candlelight until Early Dawn .
