Reynolds Beal (American, 1867-1951) Picnic at Wingaersheek Beach , 1942 Signed and dated "Reynolds Beal 1942" l. r., inscribed recto beneath the window mat "-WINGAERSHEEK BEACH - July, 1942/Picnic with the Paul Manship Family and the Gifford Beals." in pencil along left and top margins, identified on labels from Galleries Maurice Sternberg, Chicago, and C. W. Kraushaar Art Gallery, New York, affixed to the frame backing, and on a presentation plaque on the front of the frame. Watercolor on paper, sheet size 7 3/8 x 11 in. (18.6 x 28.0 cm), framed. Condition: Toning, foxing and staining to the margins, handling creases, two intentional holes along left margin from binding. Literature: Sidney Bressler, Reynolds Beal:Impressionist Landscapes and Seascapes . Rutherford: Fairleigh Dickinson University Press, 1989. pg. 196 (Cat. No. 438). Foxing and staining concentrated primarily in upper corners. Two 1/4 in. diameter binding holes on left edge with small tears from each to edge of sheet. Mounted to window mat with linen tape along top edge in two places. Inscribed "umbria" in pencil on reverse right edge. There is a modern label from Connoisseur Gallery (2006) on the backing paper.
