Edna Hibel (American, b. 1917) Women Cutting Grain Signed "Edna Hibel" l.r., identified on a label from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, on the reverse. Watercolor with gouache on paper/board, 23 x 16 7/8 in. (58.4 x 42.8 cm), framed. Condition: Unobtrusive toning, not examined out of frame. Provenance: Descended within the family of George Harold Edgell (1887-1954). Edgell was an architectural historian and a professor of fine arts at Harvard University. In 1934 he became a curator of paintings at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and assumed the directorship the following year. Acidic beveled mat and acidic corrugated cardboard backing, some acid burn to sheet verso due to backing, the sheet is lose in frame (i.e. not adhered or glued to beveled mat, though there is brown gummed tape residue to the reverse from former tape hinging), cream colored wove paper with no apparent watermark, small areas of craquelure (primarily to u.l. quadrant), small areas of pitting to paper surface, largest in the u.r. quadrant measuring approx. 1/4 x 1/8 in.
