Spanish Brass and Red-Velvet Mounted Vargueno, the rectangular upper section with fall front mounted with geometric red velvet panels accented with brass fretwork and studs, opening to interior fitted with various compartments and pigeonholes, the base with pull-out shell-form supports for fall front, with two raised paneled drawers and cupboard doors, with further red velvet and brass fretwork decorative mounts, and with star-shaped studwork, both top and lower sections with heavy side lifting handles, full ht. 60 1/2, wd. 45, dp. to 19 3/4 in. Upper section: Fallfront with shrinkage cracks, a few losses to tacks, and age wear/tears to fabric trims. Lacking fallfront latch at upper right corner. some moisture damage to right edge of base. lower section: lacking one decorative stud at upper left corner. restoration to join of left rear leg. Interior: finish wear to writing surface. some scattered shrinkage cracking to drawers/cubby doors. overall usage wear, edge scuffs and gouges, some shrinkage, and some mildewing. c. 1870/80.
