William Unger (German, 1837-1932), After William Merritt Chase (American, 1849-1916) Portrait of Frank Duveneck/The Smoker. Inscribed in the plate "Wm M Chase 1875" l.l. and signed in the plate "WUnger..."u.l., inscribed in pen "William Chase 75" and "Repose" l.c. Intaglio or process print, image size 9 1/2 x 5 1/4 in., framed. Condition: Toning, light struck, staining, and tape residue to the reverse. N.B. This print is based upon an oil portrait by William Merritt Chase of his good friend and fellow student Frank Duveneck. The young artists studied together at the Munich Academy in the 1870s. No longer extant, the original painting is thought to have been lost in a fire. The image is known only through Unger's etching. For a complete discussion of the portrait, see Ronald G.
