John Morgan (British, 1823-1886) Kinder at Play Signed "John Morgan" l. l., identified on a presentation plaque. Oil on canvas, 36 1/8 x 28 1/4 in. (91.7 x 71.7 cm), framed. Condition: Scattered retouch, craquelure, stretcher bar marks. Provenance: A private Massachusetts collection. Overall craquelure appears stable, minor stretcher bar marks. Limited areas of retouch: retouch to stripes of the stocking of the child on the right, to a small area under her skirt measuring 2 x 1/2 inch, and along the back of her skirt descending from the waist for about 4 inches. Scattered dots and subtle brush marks in the children's clothing, with a light wash of retouch between their heads.
