Mihály Munkácsy (Hungarian, 1844-1900) Lesende Frau, c. 1880 Signed "M. Munkácsy." l.r., identified on a presentation plaque, stenciled "60 Bould Malesherbes Paris/ DUBUS/COULEURS FINES & TOILES a PEINDRE/RENTOILAGE & RESTAURATION/DE TABLEAUX' on the reverse. Oil on panel, 29 x 23 1/4 in. (73.7 x 59.1 cm), in a period frame. Condition: Alligatoring, fine craquelure, minor abrasions beneath frame liner. Provenance: Private New England collection. N.B. The work appears to relate to Lesende Frau I, II, and III in Lajos Vegvari's, 1958 monograph, Munkácsy Mihály élete és muvei [The Life and Work of Mihály Munkácsy]. Subtle varnish inconsistencies to u.l. corner, losses/abrasions to edges beneath frame liner, beveled panel along all four sides to reverse. PROVENANCE: The work comes from a collecting institution, where it has been since about 1970.
