John Astley (British, c. 1724-1787) Gentleman with Book and Quills Signed and dated indistinctly "J. A.../p..xit/17..." l.l., identified on a label affixed to the stretcher. Oil on canvas, 36 3/8 x 39 1/2 in. (92.4 x 100.3 cm), framed. Condition: Lined, scattered retouch, craquelure, with lifting u.r., surface grime. Minimal dots and sashes of retouch l.l. corner, around the permeter, scatterd in the cravate and clothes, and to fill some areas of craquelure. Face and hands are not impacted. Craquelure throughout, with a patch of craquelure with lifting in the u.r. quadrant, measuring 2 x 1 1/2 inch overall, located 7 inches down from the top and 2 1/2 inches in from the right side.
