Edmund C. Coates (American, 1816-1871) Adoration in the Stable Signed and dated "E.C. Coates 1856..." l.c. Oil on canvas, 21 1/2 x 25 1/2 in., unframed. Condition: Canvas trimmed and lined, retouch, paint losses at tacking edges, craquelure, surface grime. Retouch located primarily to the background, including top center, upper corners and l.r. corner, along edges as if to repair frame abrasion, and within an area in the Virgin's drapery l.l. measuring 5 x 4 inches at its maximum. Central figures largely untouched, with very minor retouch to the back of the Virgin's hair and to the drapery over the Christ Child's head. Area of retouch measuring 1-1/4 x 1/2 inches under the far right angel's chin, and minor retouch beneath the closer angel's face. Very minor surface grime and scattered abrasions.
