Paul Bernard King (American, 1867-1947) Lunenburg Harbor/A Busy Harbor Signed "Paul King" l. r. Oil on canvas, 32 x 40 in. (81.3 x 101.6 cm), in a signed Philip N. Yates frame. Condition: Lined (onto solid support), retouch, craquelure, surface grime. There is a considerable amount of retouch in the form of a spider web-like network of very precise brush strokes that appears in the u.l., u.r. and l.r. quadrants. The pattern would suggest that this was used to fill prominent craquelure or perhaps after any flaking was consolidated. There is a vertical line of retouch in the u.r. corner about 3 inches in length. There is a broad wash of retouch to the l.l. quadrant with one area of heavier retouch at the lower edge, about 4 inches overall. The canvas was removed from its stretcher and mounted to a solid support, perhaps Masonite. The old stretcher was then used to hold the Masonite in the frame. The outer dimensions of the frame are 37 1/2 x 45 1/2 inches.
