Small Needlework Sampler, "Dolly Woodis," probably Massachusetts, late 18th/early 19th century, stitched with silk threads on a linen ground, with rows of alphabets above bands of flowers and geometric designs, (toning), 8 1/4 x 7 1/4 in. , unframed. Provenance: The sampler was found in the 1970s, in the home of a relative of Mary Elizabeth Sawyer (Mary of the nursery rhyme "Mary Had a Little Lamb") of Sterling, Massachusetts, (Sterling was once part of Lancaster).
