Antonio Nicolo Gasparo Jacobsen (Danish/American, 1850-1921) Portrait of the White Star Royal Mail Steamer Germanic. Signed, dated "A Jacobsen 1878 257 8 Av" l.r., vessel identified on bow. Oil on canvas, 22 x 36 in., in a gilt-gesso frame. Condition: Scattered paint losses, varnish yellowing, surface grime, craquelure. Note: The Germanic was designed and built by Harland and Woolff, Belfast, in 1874-75, as well as her sister ship, the Britannic. In their day, they both set records of completing 200 round trips between Liverpool and New York, with 400 passages across the Atlantic. scattered specks and spots of loss in sky, and several specks and spots elsewhere. the vessels have no similar such losses. the painting remains unlined. under the blacklight the varnish flouresces a milky light green.
