Manner of Hendrik Martensz Sorgh (Dutch, 1611-1670) Outdoor Vegetable Market Inscribed "HM [overlapping] Sorgh/1651" l. r., inscribed "H. Sorgh 1611-70..." on the stretcher. Oil on canvas, 19 x 14 3/4 in. (48.2 x 37.0 cm), framed. Condition: Original canvas trimmed and lined, possible overcleaning, heavily varnished. With a gold wax collector's mark on the stretcher. Masking varnish. A recent opinion on the work at hand has been received from Marijke de Kinkelder of the Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie (RKD), who wrote, "The painting of a Southern Landscape with Vegetable Sellers is either an imitation or a copy after Hendrick Mommers (Dutch, born c.1623-1693). Theme, figures and postures are very reminiscent of his work, but the rather stiff execution shows that it can not be considered as autograph. The copyist/imitator apparently did not know the artist Mommers and changed (or added) the signature to H Sorgh who is known to have painted market scenes as well." (email of March 12, 2012)
