May Austin Claus (American, b. 1882) Three Portraits: Arshele Sasha Gorky, Amedeo Collari, and Vera . Gorky inscribed and titled "May Austin Claus/410 Boylston Street/Boston, Mass./ Arshele [ sic ] Sasha Gorky" on the reverse, Collari signed "May Austin Claus." u.l., identified on a label affixed to the backing, Vera signed and dated "M.A. Claus '18" u.l., inscribed and titled "M.A. Claus/410 Boylston/ Boston, Mass/ Vera" on the reverse; Gorky graphite on celluloid, Collari gouache on celluloid, sizes to 5 1/4 x 3 7/8 in., framed. Condition: Vera with restored crack to celluloid, not examined out of frames. N.B. While the relationship between Claus and Arshile Gorky is unknown, Gorky lived in the Greater Boston area between 1922 and 1924, enrolling and teaching at the New School of Design and Illustration (1).
