Painted Cast Iron Penguin Doorstop, Taylor Cooke, America, c. 1930, signed on the back "No. 1 1930 Taylor Cook," (minor paint losses), ht. 9 3/8, wd. 5 3/8 in. Provenance: According to the consignor a man from Agawam, Massachusetts was employed by the Western Mass Electric Power Co. when the 1938 hurricane hit. He was assigned the job of floating down the Connecticut River in a row boat to cut any downed power lines which were collecting debris such as trees etc. He came to a house which was surrounded by water and an elderly woman was calling for help. He rescued her and her pet dog from the rising waters of the flood. She was so thankful that she gave him this penguin doorstop which he kept all his life. When he passed away at 94 1/2, he left it to his daughter who has treasured it these many years.
