Leon Jean Basile Perrault (French, 1832-1908) Spring Signed "L. Perrault" l.r., titled on a presentation plaque. Oil on canvas, 47 x 31 in. (119.5 x 78.5 cm), in a period frame. Condition: Lined, retouch, craquelure, surface imperfections, frame abrasions with paint loss u.r. Provenance: Purchased c. 1930 in Boston, then by family descent. Areas of craquelure and wrinkling to paint surface. Major area of broadly brushed retouch to the left of the child's head, and above her head extending to the u.r. corner. Some retouch to the face including a line under right eye (1 in.) on her right cheek (2 in.), down the center of her forehead (1/1/2 in.) and an area over her right shoulder (1-1/2 in). Heavy varnish to the lower 1/4 of the composition.
