Henry W. Henley (British, fl. 1871-1895) Portrait of Charley, A Manchester Terrier Signed "H W HENLEY" l.r., inscribed and dated "...26.10.1891" on the reverse. Oil on canvas, 12 x 10 in. (30.5 x 25.3 cm), framed. Condition: Lined, retouch, surface grime. Provenance: Private Litchfield, Connecticut, Estate; Private Collection; William Doyle Galleries March 24, 2009, lot 58, Private Collection. Wax lined and with a partial canvas relining, trimmed to preserve inscription on the reverse. Inscription is written in two different styles and is not fully legible. but seems to read, "In Memory of/Charley/.../died Nov. 26th 1891/H W HENLEY/Miss Harris/with Boots & Alice's/best wishes for her/future happiness/26.10.1891." The change in writing style occurs after the artist's name and before "Miss Harris." Old repair u.r. quadrant.
