The Burkholder Family Carved Walnut Tall Case Clock, George Hoff, Lancaster, Pennsylvania, late 18th century, the scrolled cresting terminating in carved rosettes above the 14-in. white-painted, polychrome and gilt dial with moon's age indicator in the arch, and floral spandrels, with hands indicating the date, hours, minutes, and seconds inscribed "George Hoff/Lancaster," and brass eight-day weight-driven movement, with three turned wooden finials, three keys, a winder, pendulum, and two brass-cased lead weights, original surface, (minor imperfections), ht. 98 in. Provenance: According to family history, this clock descended to John Burkholder (1803-1843) and then to the current owner through six generations of the Burkholder family, farmers in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Literature: George Hoff is listed in Wood et al., Clockmakers of Lancaster County and Their Clocks, 1750-1850 , New York, 1977. the raised panel in base has breaks, foor original, dial in good shape, some loss to the moon's age disc, seatboard probably an old replacement.
