Georg Kolbe (German, 1877-1947) Skizze zu Wolkenfahrt , 1925 Monogrammed "GK" within the cast on base, foundry stamped "H. NOACK/ BERLIN FRIEDENAU on the base, identified on a label from the DeCordova Museum (see below) and with a label fragment from the Busch-Reisinger Museum, Cambridge, Massachusetts, underneath the plinth. Bronze with dark brown patina, 12 x 6 1/2 x 6 1/2 in. (30.5 x 16.5 x 16.5 cm), mounted to a granite plinth. Condition: Surface dust. Provenance: Acquired by Swetzoff in Germany c. January 19, 1952; purchased from Hyman Swetzoff on March 18, 1952; private Massachusetts collection. Kolbe devoted himself to figurative sculpture, and is perhaps best-known for his classical female nude Alba (Dawn) which was commissioned for the German Pavilion of the 1929 International Exposition in Barcelona by Mies van der Rohe. The present work is one of four known casts in bronze of this study for Wolkenfahrt ; the couple depicted is based on Dante's tragic lovers, Paolo and Francesca.
