Esther Mabel Baldwin Williams (American, 1867-1964) Portrait of Ruth and Hazel Smart of Winchester, Massachusetts, with Their Dog , 1898 Signed and dated "E. M. Baldwin 1898" u.l.,with a label from the Boston Art Club affixed to the stretcher. Oil on canvas, 35 x 19 1/2 in. (88.9 x 49.5 cm), framed. Condition: Craquelure, surface grime. The label on the stretcher from the Boston Art Club bears the title "In-doors." A painting by the Esther Baldwin with that title was exhibited at the Boston Art Club, January 19-February 16, 1895, as item 93. However, because the portrait of the Smart children is dated 1898, it seems plausible that the artist may have reused the stretcher from 'In-doors" for the portrait at hand.
