Simka Simkhovitch (Russian/American, 1893-1949) Family Group Unsigned. Oil on canvas, 24 x 24 in. (61.0 x 61.0 cm), framed. Condition: Lined, retouch, craquelure. Provenance: Through the collection of Sonya Simkhovitch, daughter of the artist. N.B. This group is thought to be the artist's family, children Sonya (left) and Naomi, with his wife, Elsa Fornel. There is a conservation treatment report from Nina Roth Wells, Georgetown, Maine, affixed to the frame backing paper. The treatment report states,in part, that the lining adhesive is BEVA film and that the stretcher is new. The inpainting was done with Gamblin Restoration Colors. Retouch in horizontal lines as if to fill craquelure or creases (perhaps from the canvas having been rolled at one time) located upper center, as well as along the right side including in the neck of the figure on the right, and along the baby's left arm. Abrasions/grime to u.r. edge. Natural pigment fluorescence to young girl's white blouse and face.
