Literature: Laurie Norton Moffatt, Norman Rockwell: A Definitive Catalogue, Volume I , (Hanover: University Press of New England, 1986), p. 685, no. S381a. N.B. The present work was one of seven vignettes of various parings (one adult to another) that were created as story illustrations for the Ladies' Home Journal (November 1936) for a picture editorial called "Gossips" by Norman Rockwell. This image is related in subject to the Saturday Evening Post cover illustration published on March 6, 1948 called "The Gossips," (Moffatt C441). We wish to thank the Norman Rockwell Museum for their kind assistance cataloguing the lot. Craquelure to areas of heaviest impasto on both women's hats; may benefit from a very gentle cleaning; no additional condition issues to report. The work is also listed in ProjectNORMAN through the Norman Rockwell Museum (http://collection.nrm.org).
