Ferdinand Joseph Gueldry (French, 1858-1945) Cows at Pasture on a Summer Day Signed "F. Gueldry." l.r. Oil on canvas, 21 1/4 x 25 3/4 in. (54.0 x 65.4 cm), framed. Condition: Retouch, abrasions, surface grime. While the painting does not appear to be lined, there is a second layer of canvas beneath the primary canvas, suggesting that the painting was stretched over an existing canvas on its stretcher. Both layers are visible along the tacking edges, but they they are not fused together as would be expected in a traditional "lining." There are two small holes in the "inner" canvas which do not affect the painting itself. Abrasions with retouch to u.r. corner, the largest measuring 5 inches; fine craquelure to sky, mild canvas deformations to corners.
