Raffaello Spano (Italian, 1817-1863) Study from Life Signed "Raf. Spano" l.r., inscribed "Studio dal vero./ Raffaele Spano dipinse/ Napoli" on the reverse, inscribed "Atelier de pinture Strada S. Pasquale...Napoli" in pencil on the stretcher, with a label from Conca Giuseppe, Doratore, Milano, affixed to the frame. Oil on canvas, 18 1/2 x 15 in. (47.0 x 38.1 cm), framed. Condition: Retouch, surface grime, minor canvas deformations. Areas of retouch as follows: a 3/4 inch diameter circle to proper right cheek, a line measuring 3/4 inches located in beard proper right side below lip, a pair of dashes measuring 1 inch overall to beard proper left side, a dot to the proper left shoulder. Minute paint loss l.l. in the green robe. Subtle stretcher bar marks. An area of surface imperfection in hair, measuring 1/2 inch diameter, which does not fluoresce but which appears to be an old repair.
