Emily Winthrop Miles (American, 1893-1962) Portrait Study , Possibly Kate Winthrop . Monogram l.l., identified on an exhibition label (see below) affixed to the back of the frame. Charcoal with chalk highlights, 20 1/2 x 15 3/8 in., framed. Condition: Foxing, toning. Exhibitions: Fifth Annual Exhibition, 1913, Stockbridge Exhibition of Painting and Sculpture. N.B. Kate Winthrop was the artist's younger sister. Kate's possible role as the sitter is suggested by a green embossed "Dymo" style label reading "Kate Winthrop" on the back of the frame. In 1913, Kate would have been about 14 years old.
